Latest: Black Coffee Discusses Going To Therapy To Heal After His Divorce

October is Mental Health Awareness Month, and many celebrities, like Grammy-winning DJ and producer Nkosinathi “Black Coffee” Maphumulo, are speaking out about how they have dealt with mental health concerns.

During his highly publicized divorce from actress Enhle Mbali Mlotshwa, the world-renowned house musician revealed how he sought counseling to recuperate.

On PS I Love You on October 9, Black Coffee was providing mental health advise with his long-time buddy and performer Mnqobi “Shota” Mdabe.

The show, which airs on Mzansi Magic on Saturdays, is a four-part trip through Shota and his wife, TV star Phumeza Mdabe’s wedding day.

With this, the former pair frequently made the Twitter trends list, with Tweeps labeling the We Dance Again DJ an abuser and womaniser.

When I asked Mdabe how this affected him, he said he chose to go to treatment.

“When I was first going through my divorce stuff, the first therapist I saw, I told her, ‘I need you to help me get over the fact that I’m being told how horrible I am as a human being. I’m starting to believe it, I need you help me and, if I am terrible, tell me’ …

“So I did that … when I’m fine I changed my therapist. I went to another one and said to her; ‘help me take responsibility for all my actions’ … ” he added.

Black Coffee stressed upon Shota the importance of being thoroughly anchored in God and counseling in order to survive celebrity.

“It is the most important thing to do. Understanding fame, the way I understand fame now. It is the most important thing. You need to be deeply rooted in two things … God and therapy.”
